After making waves by quietly launching the industry's first 4TB internal hard drive in Japan just days ago, Hitachiannounced it is now shipping its new Ultrastar C10K900 enterprise hard drive, which the company claims are the fastest 10K hard drives on the planet. According to Hitachi, C10K900 drives offer 18 percent faster sequential and 17 percent faster random performance than the nearest competitor.
The Ultrastar C10K900 is Hitachi's fourth-generation, small form factor enterprise hard drive. It's equipped with a SAS 6Gb/s interface and sports a 64MB cache buffer to optimize read/write response time. Average seek times are as low as 3.8ms, while its fast rotational speed drops the average latency to below 3ms, Hitachi says.
For enterprise junkies, the Ultrastar C10K900 hits the industry's highest 10K capacity point at 900GB, offering up more capacity for less space and greater configuration flexibility. The drive family is also available in 600GB, 450GB, and 300GB capacities, all of which are molded in a compact 2.5-inch design.
