Upcoming technology transformations of the next five years, according to IBM

Technology stalwart IBM on Tuesday predicted classrooms getting to know students and doctors using DNA to customize care are among five big changes on the horizon.

IBM said that its annual forecast of five ways technology will change lives in the coming five years was "driven by a new era of cognitive systems where machines will learn, reason and engage with us in a more natural and personalized way."

And while software evolves to "think" in ways similar to the human brain, computing power and troves of data kept handy in the Internet "cloud" will enable machines to power innovations in classrooms, local shops, doctors' offices, city streets and elsewhere, according to the firm behind the Watson computer that triumphed on US television game show Jeopardy.

"Over time these computers will get smarter and more customized through interactions with data, devices and people, helping us take on what may have been seen as unsolvable problems by using all the information that surrounds us and bringing the right insight or suggestion to our fingertips right when it's most needed," IBM contended.

I never thought the future of computing could be kick-started with just $99, which is made possible using crowdfunding platforms.

I could still remember the day I watch the iRobot as a teen, and being skeptical about my brother’s statement that one day, the driverless car will become reality. And it’s now a reality, made possible by… a search engine company, Google.

While the data source is still a secret recipe, the Google driverless car is powered by artificial intelligence that utilizes the input from the video cameras inside the car, a sensor on the vehicle’s top, and some radar and position sensors attached to different positions of the car. Sounds like a lot of effort to mimic the human intelligence in a car, but so far the system has successfully driven 1609 kilometres without human commands!

Eye tracking has been actively discussed by technology enthusiasts throughout these years, but it’s really challenging to implement. But Eye Tribe actually did this. They successfully created the technology to allow you to control your tablet, play flight simulator, and even slice fruits in Fruit Ninja only with your eye movements.

It’s basically taking the common eye-tracking technology and combining it with a front-facing camera plus some serious computer-vision algorithm, and voila, fruit slicing done with the eyes! A live demo was done in LeWeb this year and we may actually be able to see it in in action in mobile devices in 2013.

Currently the company is still seeking partnership to bring this sci-fi tech into the consumer market but you and I know that this product is simply too awesome to fail.

New Google rules do not miss out!

Google keeps changing its rules to ensure it maintains dynamism and at the same time allows the newbie to have a crack at competition laying out a fair playing round for everyone once in a while.

Google has changed its ‘Terms of Service’ to permit it to plaster users' names, photos and lots of other personal information all over relevant advertisements that pop up on various websites.

The new rules are applicable only to those users who are over the age of 18. Google announced these changes to its Terms of Service and mentioned that it will take effect only after November 13, 2013.

What will this change do? Users' profile names and uploaded pictures will be served up together with content such as reviews and other information that they share online, advertisements, comments they post, or who and what they follow.

The content will be shared and visible only with and who the people are following or have befriended on various social networks and only their names and pictures is what they will have access to see.

A fuming John Simpson the privacy project director of Consumer Watchdog said, "Basically, both Google and Facebook want to turn their users into unpaid pitchmen for advertisers. At this point, we are assessing the situation."

Google is being a little cautious while doing this as it is giving users an option to opt out and is overlooking minors. While on the other hand, Facebook has a similar thing; have included 13-17 year olds as well.

It could be said that Google is being extremely sensitive to the privacy concerns of their users. After all, Google has most of the information out there and those companies it works by having "a worldwide license to use, host, amass, replicate, adjust, create derivative works, communicate, issue, publicly perform, publicly present and hand out such content."

World's largest radio telescope is operational after 30 years

After 30 years of planning and 10 years of construction, the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) has become fully operational in northern Chile.

The $1.5bn project was inaugurated at an official ceremony attended by 500 people including the President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera. This event marked the completion of all major systems of the giant telescope and its formal transition from a construction site to a fully-fledged observatory. ALMA is a partnership between Europe, North America and East Asia in cooperation with the Republic of Chile. It was originally conceived as three separate projects in Europe, the USA and Japan in the 1980s, but merged to one in the 1990s. Construction started in 2003.

After three years of construction, a major milestone has been achieved for renewable energy in the Middle East, with the opening of a 100 megawatt (MW) solar power plant.

The Shams solar power station is located near Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. With 258,000 parabolic trough mirrors, covering 2.5 sq km (0.97 sq mi), it generates up to 100 megawatts (MW) of power, making it the largest station of its kind in the world. The defence contractor, Lockheed Martin, has reported a new method for desalination that is vastly cheaper and more efficient, using nanotechnology.
